I went home this weekend for Easter, and as I was driving up in the rain (and snow!) on Saturday, I started to feel low.  I got off the highway and was trying to test.  And of course, I dropped the bottle of strips.  It was still closed, so I didn't lose any, but I actually needed to park my car in order to test.  So I parked my car and I was 70 mg/dL.  So out came the juicebox and into the mall went I to find Starbucks.  I walked in where I thought the food court was, and it wasn't.  So I had arrow vision for the little map to get to Starbucks.  All I needed to do was turn my head 90 degrees to the right though.  So in I walked, and when it was my turn to order the woman had a "you look completely out of it" face on and it took everything I had just to order my coffee and not confirm her suspicions.  In a few minutes, all was well and I was back on my way.

Low BG + No Parking Spots

Lately I've been going home, or somewhere else kinda far away every weekend.  Not that this is bad, it just means that I end up driving back late on Sunday.  I test before I drive, but BGs can change quite a bit in an hour.  There have been a few times lately where I start to feel low as I'm getting off the highway.  Luckily, I live within a mile of the exit.  Not luckily, I have to park on the street.  In the most perfect of conditions, I am not a good parallel parker. When I am feeling low, and I need to figure out whether my car will fit in certain spots or if there are spots at all, it is not good.  A few weeks ago, I had to go wait in the classy joint across the street because there were no spots.  I keep my tabs in the handy cup holder on my door, but the heat and weakness overwhelmed me.  I am literally two buildings and a street away from my apartment, and I can't go there!  When all I want is to be  in my cozy apartment, I'm stuck in my car.  Watching people go in and out, and generally on the phone.  But sometimes no one answers, and then I'm even more nervous.
Tonight I have synchronized swimming, so I'm hoping that my BGs and my neighborhood allow me to get off the highway, park my car and collapse in my apartment, rather than waiting in the parking lot.

December 15: Home for the Holidays

"I just want you to know I'm always here." - Diabetes

During the every day mundane tasks, diabetes is still there.  I found that out today the hard way.  I have been on a roller coaster for the past few days, so the times I've been testing throughout the day has also been on a rise.  Today I started kinda high, almost low, then bounced back up, and kept going.  As I bolused on the way back from getting Girl Genius, I got the "oh so fun" No Delivery alarm.  I was on the rise and definitely needed my bolus.  I grabbed my pen, attached the needle and primed it.  As I pulled up to a red light, I yanked up my sweatpants and got my pen all set up.  This light is notoriously long, so I wasn't worried, I put the needle in, and the light turns green.  I plunge the pen faster than I ever have before, all while taking my foot off the brake and trying to step on the gas, and steer.  I get around the corner, and I take the pen out, shake my pant leg back down and continue on my way.  By the time I get back to the Genius household, my BG is coming down.  It may not have been the smartest or safest way to get what I needed.  But it worked, and I got the outcome I wanted.  After picking up Boy Genius from school, I changed my site and the rest of the day has been "fine."


By "fine," I mean that I found out that Diabetes Awareness Month actually means: Have fun on this roller coaster ride!
